Feeder's full-length debut album didn't set the charts alight in 1997, but it did make an impression on the angst-ridden-teen market. Polythene is a successful fusion of metal and indie rock, but what really sets it apart is its underlying melodicism. Like Therapy? and Smashing Pumpkins before them, this trio has a good idea about what makes great pop music. Tracks such as "Polythene Girl," "My Perfect Day," and "Tangerine" have enough heavy guitars to please the teenage fan base, yet are still bright and catchy enough to please pop fans.
